Run Werewolf Run is the first novel from Onur Tukel, who adapted it from a feature film script he wrote in 2018. “I’ve always loved this script,” Tukel says. “It’s one of my favorite projects. Covid complicated production for so many films in 2020, and I really wanted to bring this project to fruition, so adapting it as a novel made sense.”
Tukel started adapting Run Werewolf Run as a novel in the summer of 2020. “Trapped inside during those Covid years, what else was there to do but write a novel?” He never thought it would take years to complete but is grateful that he saw it through. “I can write screenplays pretty fast. But prose is an entirely different beast. There’s so much rewriting that it’s almost maddening. I thought it would take me a year or two to write this. It took five years.”
Tukel did bask in the freedom that comes with writing a book. “You can do so much externally and internally. You can write gigantic set pieces and delve into a character’s thoughts. It’s the best of both worlds.”
The novel ended up deviating wildly from the original script. “The fun of adapting something is the ability to take it to a deeper place.”
